Home Again, Home Again…Jiggity Jig

October 28, 2008

There is a fantastic children’s book that Clare’s “Ninny” (Justin’s mom) got for her last year called To Market, To Market. The large board-book features an elderly disheveled woman who heads to the grocery store to buy fixings for dinner and each and every livestock animal (pig, goose, duck, cow) she brings home invariably escapes, sending her back to the store over and over. The story begins with “To market, to market, to buy a fat pig. Home again, home again, jiggity jig.” Clare loved this book for a long while and learned many an animal sound flipping through its pages. I love this book because a) its illustrations are fantastic and feature both paintings and black/white photographs of a local grocery in town called Ideal Market, and b) it’s always fun to see what kinds of trouble the animals create for the old lady when she returns home…total chaos!

Okay, so you might be thinking that we returned home from our Miami vacation to some kind of similar fate, but thankfully that is not the case. Our trip to see family in Florida was a complete success. We did a fantastic job of pacing ourselves, not overextending ourselves, and avoiding tons of time in the car running all over town.

We got in two quality visits with Clare’s great-grandparents, who reveled in her toddler-hood and couldn’t stop bragging about how smart she is, how fast she can run, how sweet she is, and “oh-would-you-look-at-the-way-she eats her breakfast!” It was pretty darn cute to see how much they marveled in her and a bittersweet reminder that we don’t live closer.

Clare had her very first trip to the beach this weekend, too, which she absolutely loved. Like the Pisces that she is, she laughed and squealed as the waves crashed into us in the high surf. Luck was on our side, as we caught the only two hours of sun the weekend afforded. Justin dug out a bathtub for Clare down by the water’s edge. Three feet down and covered in sand, Clare was a happy little clam with her shovel and bucket. When it was time to go, Clare ran along the warm sand and happily stood under the beach-side shower while we stripped her bare and attempted to wash out the sand from every crack…not an easy task. (To be extra sure that she was well-rinsed, we all went for a swim back at Grandma and Poppa’s house and our skinny-dippin’ child was in heaven.)

In all, it was a wonderful weekend of family-time and we were even able to visit with some old friends, which is always good. I don’t regret that we live in Boulder since we are so happy here and have made a nice life for ourselves and our family. It is unfortunate, however, as I am reminded by the four hour cross-country flight, that Boulder and Miami are 2000+ miles apart. Let’s just say that there is a really good reason that two year olds are required to have their own seats on the plane!

I am happy to report for those following our landscaping saga, that we returned home to GRASS!! Yes, our front and backyards are now green (not for long with winter fast approaching) and sprinkler system working. Ah, the little things in life, eh?
